What is clinical genomic testing, and how does it differ from tests I can order myself?

You might have come across advertisements for DNA tests available to the public, often linked to genealogy and ancestry research. These tests have sparked interest in genomics and health, but it’s important to note that direct-to-consumer tests are not as comprehensive as clinical genomic testing. They don’t provide a complete picture of your child’s health.

IntellxxDNA™ offers your child’s clinician at Midwest Center for Brain Health in-depth, science-based genomic insights. After your child’s test results are ready, you will meet with their clinician to discuss their genomic profile, the associated risks, and potential strategies for prevention or intervention to support their optimal health and well-being. This process ensures that the test results are understood in context, guiding the next steps in your child’s care.

What information do IntellxxDNA reports provide for my child?

IntellxxDNA reports don’t make decisions for you, but they offer invaluable insights into your child’s unique genetic makeup to help their clinician at Midwest Center for Brain Health develop personalized care. Here’s how it works:

Your child’s DNA contains variations called SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms), which can indicate both advantages and risks. Our reports analyze how these variations interact and influence your child’s quality of life. We include evidence-based recommendations encompassing lifestyle, nutrition, supplements, and medications, which serve as a basis for discussion between you and your child’s clinician.

I'm worried about some of the risks that may be revealed in my child's DNA. Is it worth it, and what can we really do about it?

Your child’s DNA is not their destiny. Understanding their genomic profile empowers you to make informed choices that can impact their future quality of life. Their clinician will consider the genomic profile as one of several factors when making clinical decisions to support your child’s optimal health.

Why do I need to order this report through my child's doctor or clinician?

Medical genomics is a complex field, even for well-trained clinicians. IntellxxDNA ensures that clinicians at the Midwest Center for Brain Health stay up-to-date with ongoing education, providing access to the latest evidence-based genomic interpretations. Requiring IntellxxDNA providers to be licensed medical professionals allows us to include advanced medical information in our reports.

Your child’s genomic makeup is foundational information that should be understood within the context of their overall health profile. Your healthcare provider at Midwest Center for Brain Health will use genomic intelligence to personalize clinical decisions based on your child’s unique healthcare needs and goals.

Does health insurance cover IntellxxDNA tests or reports?

IntellxxDNA reports are not covered by insurance.

Should my child's genetic test results be included in their health record?

Genetic information in medical records may be reviewed by providers of life insurance, long-term care insurance, and disability insurance. If your child’s IntellxxDNA report reveals a significant risk that you think should be included in their health record, discuss the pros and cons with your licensed healthcare professional. IntellxxDNA provides guidance to clinicians on best practices.
